Extra-curriculars

Yearbook
The extra-curricular that takes up most of my time is being co-sponsor of the yearbook. The other half of the "sponsor team" is Shiloh art teacher Randi Pollock. Together, we oversee the production of two books. One is a paperback book, Friends & Me,  and includes students in grades pre-kindergarten through sixth grades. Students in junior-senior high are in a larger hard cover book called Carpe Diem ("Seize the Day", for those of you unfamiliar with Latin).  Balfour Publishing, formerly Taylor Publishing Company,  from Texas publishes both of our books.

Producing a yearbook has certainly changed a great deal since I was editor way back when. We no longer design pages on "quads" or print our own pictures in the darkroom. Those archaic procedures have been replaced by computer design and digital pictures.

We take thousands of digital pictures every year. Most are taken with the "good" camera, but student's are welcome to share pictures taken with their own cameras as well. Digital photography offers some MAJOR advantages! The downside is trying to organize and store our photos and choosing the best pictures from all of the great ones that are taken each year. Not a bad problem to have!

Our books are designed and submitted completely online. That means that staff members can work on their pages from any computer with internet access.

This year's staff is led my senior Jacob Henry. He is doing a wonderful job organizing students, planning the book and has taken on a great deal of the photographic responsibilities also. I am certain that this will be the best yearbook we have ever produced.

Ecology Teams

Shiloh students have two opportunities to participate in competitions involving environmental topics. In the fall, the US Army Corps of Engineers sponsors the Eco-meet. High school students participate at the varsity level, junior high at the JV level. There are three topics chosen for students at each level to study.
The Varsity Eco-Team finished in 6th place out of 18 teams.
Nice job!

  • The JV team didn't finish in a top spot at the Eco-Meet,
but they gained a year of valuable experience.
